New book answers tough questions about childhood obesity

7 October 2010

Murdoch Childrens researcher Dr Matt Sabin has released a new book to help parents combat childhood obesity.

Is your child overweight? gives parents a practical guide on issues concerning their child's weight.

The content is based on over 10 years experience in the clinical management of overweight children, and includes tips on how to identify excessive weight gain at a young age and what to do about it.

The number of obese children has doubled since the 1980s, with approximately a quarter of all Australian children now being either overweight or obese.

"This book aims to answer some of the difficult questions parents face when it comes to their child's weight," Matt said.

"It's about helping parents identify when there's a problem and giving them the tools they need to take action."

Matt leads research into childhood obesity at Murdoch Childrens and is a paediatrician at The Royal Children's Hospital.

Is your child overweight? is available at most bookstores including the Child Health and Safety Resource Centre Bookshop at The Royal Children's Hospital. It can also be purchased online at www.wilkinsonpublishing.com.au
