Murdoch gift

21 November 2011

This month, Rupert Murdoch, on behalf of his family, announced a special $10 million gift to help fit out, equip and build capacity within our new home within the redeveloped Royal Children's Hospital campus.

The announcement was made at the first official function in our new building, and was attended by over 40 members of the Murdoch family, Murdoch Childrens board directors and major donors.

The gift represents a continuation of 25 years of support from the Murdoch family, who have contributed almost $50 million over this time.

At the event, Rupert Murdoch spoke to the 80-strong crowd, speaking about his family's involvement with the institute, especially his mother Dame Elisabeth, who helped establish the institute back in 1986.

Guests also heard from Megan French, a young research assistant at Murdoch Childrens and Friedreich ataxia patient, Tamara Curran.

As well as the Murdoch family gift, the Pratt family and Pratt Foundation have also pledged $1 million in support.

John and Janet Calvert Jones and the Calvert-Jones Foundation, The Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation, Rowly and Judy Patterson, Anne and Milan Kantor, for the Kantor family, the Miller family, Leigh and Sue Clifford, Paula Fox and her family, The George Castan Charitable Foundation and Schiavello, have also contributed to the fundraising campaign.

A further $15.75 million is still needed to have a fully functioning facility.
