Administrative staff are responsible for performing the administrative tasks that are required for the effective functioning of the VCGS Pathology laboratories. They come under the supervision of senior scientists and will be required to perform and assist in a broad range of administrative duties required by the cytogenetics/molecular genetics team. As much responsibility as possible will be given to staff for performing these duties and a highly responsible attitude to the laboratory’s work will be required to perform tasks to the standard necessary to support our high quality service.

Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, the independent research arm of the Royal Children’s Hospital, discovers ways to prevent and treat conditions affecting babies, children and adolescents. A key centre within the Healthy Development theme, the Centre for Community Child Health is at the forefront of Australian research into early childhood development and behaviour. We are looking for a Research Assistant to:
• Undertake research and evaluation projects on a range of issues relating to families with young children
• Relevant Health Science qualification to at least Honours level or equivalent, eg Psychology, Sociology, Public Health
• A demonstrated range of social research procedures to a high standard
• experience in designing, undertaking and interpreting qualitative and/or quantitative research
• ability to adapt procedures and exercise a degree of innovation
• background in working with families and communities
• Utilise and maintain some technical expertise in quantitative (SPSS, STATA) and/or qualitative (NVivo) software packages.

A position of Fellow in Metabolic Medicine for a minimum of 6 months from February 2011 is available within Genetic Health Services Victoria (formerly VCGS). The position would be appropriate for an advanced trainee in Paediatric Medicine.
Training in metabolic medicine can be complementary to a fellowship in another discipline in Paediatrics or Adult Medicine such as: Endocrinology, Neurology, Child Development, Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Intensive Care etc.
There would be an opportunity to extend the training period to a full fellowship in Clinical Biochemical Genetics (Metabolic Diseases).
Genetic Health Services Victoria provides Metabolic Services for Victoria and Tasmania as well as an extensive range of laboratory metabolic and genetic tests. You will participate in out-patients and in-patients consultations, in the management of patients with metabolic disorders who are admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital and in follow-up outpatient clinics. You will also participate in laboratory reporting sessions for a variety of metabolic tests (urine organic acids an ‘metabolic screen’, blood amino acids, mitochondrial respiratory chain enzymes etc).
It is hoped that by the end of your training period, you will have a solid knowledge of the clinical approach to patients with suspected metabolic disorders and be able to interpret results of metabolic tests.
