PhD Projects: Best of Both Worlds
Melbourne trainee surgeon Jonathan Robin sees research expertise as a crucial skill in giving his patients the best possible treatment.
Fresh from completing his Basic Surgical Training last year, Jonathan has put his promising surgical career on hold to focus on research for the Gait CCRE and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.
"The importance of research is really only understood when there are decisions being made as a doctor and a surgeon which have a real impact on a person's life," Jonathan explained.
Jonathan is the orthopaedic clinical research fellow at the Hugh Williamson Gait Analysis Laboratory at The Royal Children's Hospital. As part of his Doctorate of Medicine with The University of Melbourne, he is working on a major clinical trial to find out if children with cerebral palsy benefit from having correctional surgery and post-operative physiotherapy over many years.
