PhD Projects: Research on the Front Line
Physiotherapist Gavin Williams sees the human cost of road trauma every day at the Acquired Brain Injury unit at the Epworth Hospital.
As part of his job in rehabilitation, Gavin also saw victims expecting much more than the ability to walk again. They wanted to be able to run, play sport and resume their active lives.
In his recently-completed PhD, working with the Gait CCRE and La Trobe University, Gavin developed the HiMAT (High-level Mobility Assessment Tool) to reflect goals higher than walking. The research has been published in several brain injury journals and more than 100 rehabilitation centres around the world are now using the HiMAT.
Gavin recently started post-doctoral research, this time using the gait laboratory to analyse walking and running patterns of people with traumatic brain injury.
