Dame Elisabeth Murdoch celebrates 100 years. A momentous milestone for our amazing patron

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch in 1971Our Patron, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE turns 100 on 8 February 2009.

As a meaningful tribute to celebrate Dame Elisabeth’s centenary milestone and her tremendous philanthropic contributions to Australians, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute has launched a special campaign in her honour, to raise funds for our life saving child health research - a birthday gift we know she would sincerely appreciate.

Universally admired for her philanthropic work, Dame Elisabeth has had an impact on people from all walks of life and her generosity knows no bounds. She is renowned for her compassion, serenity, positive outlook on life and vigour. She is an exemplary philanthropist who encourages others to experience the joy of giving.

In 100 years Dame Elisabeth has supported countless causes from academia to the arts and medical research, to those in prison, battling mental illness or substance abuse. She has also supported many of Melbourne and Australia's most cherished institutions, from the Royal Children's Hospital to the Australian Ballet and the Botanic Gardens.

Dame Elisabeth and her family were also integral to establishing the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, and have seen it grow from just a handful of researchers in 1984 to today being the largest child health research institute in the country.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch nowShe has lived through two world wars, met many of the most influential people of the 20th century, been a loving matriarch to 20 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren and even had a flower named after her. And now even in her 100th year she still keeps a diary full of appointments!

Few can rival Dame Elisabeth’s contribution to Australia. Please join us in recognising and marking her amazing milestone by giving her the kind of birthday present she would appreciate – a donation to the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. Proceeds raised will fund research into conditions such as allergies, diabetes, obesity, cancer, premature birth and mental health problems. Please donate today and be sure to include your special birthday message to Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.
