A website to help Australian parents raise their children

A landmark Australian website is helping parents and carers raise young children. Officially launched in May by the Minister for Families and Community Services, Mal Brough, raisingchildren.net.au provides expert information on raising children from newborns to eight years of age.

The user friendly format, which is already attracting 80,000 visitors a month, was developed by the Raising Children Network, a collaboration of the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute's Centre for Community Child Health, the Smart Population Foundation and the Victorian Parenting Centre.

The Federal Government commissioned the website, spending $4 million over four years, following research by the Centre for Community Child Health which showed parents were feeling overloaded by conflicting messages on parenting.

Practical tools and up to date information on child health, safety, nutrition, learning, parental wellbeing, family management and kids' activities can be found on the website.

"Parents just want to be able to find reliable, up to date information in one place," said Professor Frank Oberklaid, Director of the Centre for Community Child Health. It's now available at raisingchildren.net.au, he said."
