Adult influenza vaccine studyMurdoch Childrens Research Institute, in collaboration with the Royal Children’s Hospital and the University of Melbourne is conducting a study of a licensed influenza vaccine in healthy adults aged 50-64 years inclusive. Influenza (also known as "Flu") is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus and is associated with serious complications including pneumonia and worsening of chronic diseases. Influenza spreads easily from person to person and can affect a large number of people. Vaccination with a flu vaccine is seen as the most effective way to prevent flu outbreaks in the community. This study will provide more information about how well vaccination with a flu vaccine protects against infection with the flu virus. Participants will be vaccinated in Autumn 2008 and then followed over winter and spring to record episodes of respiratory infections. This study has been approved by the Ethics in Human Research Committee of the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne.
