Preparing couples for life with a new baby

Relationship problems, tiredness, guilt and anxiety are among problems experienced by many new mothers, a study has found.

Researchers at Murdoch Childrens interviewed mums about their sexual health and intimacy after childbirth as part of a longitudinal study of more than 1500 first time mothers.

Lead researcher Hannah Woolhouse said many women reported feeling less physically and emotionally satisfied in their relationship after childbirth.

“What we found is how unprepared a lot of women were for changes in this area of their lives and how they felt really shocked by the changes that came about after having a baby,” she said.

The researchers have used the findings to prepare an information pamphlet for new mums and a longer booklet for health professionals about the impact of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting on sexual health and intimacy.

The pamphlets are available online at www.mcri.edu.au/maternalhealthstudy/ or by phoning 9090 5208.
