Anaesthesia & Pain Management
The Anaesthesia and Pain Management research group focuses on improving the quality of care received by children before, during and after their operations. This involves identifying and measuring how patients respond to anaesthesia. Our results can influence change in anaesthesia practice, to pursue clinical excellence. Our group is committed to providing a structured program of teaching and mentoring to ensure future research in this area.
Research Overview
The Anaesthesia and Pain Management research group has a wide-ranging and varied number of research interests and collaborations.
The main themes of research are:
• Neurotoxicity of anaesthesia in infants
• EEG changes with anaesthesia in infants and utility and validity of commercial processed EEG devices in children during anaesthesia
• Memory formation; awareness and implicit memory in children during anaesthesia
• Behaviour change and anxiety in children during the peri-operative period
• Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of general anaesthetics in infants
• Optimal intra venous maintenance fluid for children
• Pharmacokinetics of regional anaesthetics in infants
• Pain and vomiting post surgery in children
• Pain and analgesia requirements in children undergoing day case procedures.
