Oral Health Research

The oral health research unit conducts research in to the aetiology, impact and prevention of dental disease in children. Our activities range from community based public health intervention studies to in vitro laboratory investigations in to composition and behaviour of developmentally defective teeth. In addition we are interested in the impact of medical disorders on the oral health of affected children

Research Overview

The impact that poor oral health has on children and their families extends further than simply the mouth. Dental problems in early childhood have been shown not only to be predictive of future dental problems but also to impact upon general growth and cognitive development by interfering with sleep, appetite, eating patterns, poor school behaviour and negative self-esteem. The oral health research unit focuses on improving the oral health outcomes for children. We have a number of approaches from basic science, to clinical research and through to public health and health promotion. Our collaborations include the Melbourne Cleft Lip and Palate service and the School of Health and Social Development at Deakin University.
