HopSCOTCH: The Shared Care Outcomes Trial in Children (2008-2010).
Most of the 200,000 overweight or obese children in Australia aren’t currently receiving any care for their obesity. This could change dramatically if general practitioners were supported to work effectively with specialist services.
HopSCOTCH is a randomised trial of a shared-care approach to managing obesity in 3 to 9 year olds. GPs will share care with a specialist multidisciplinary team, supported by state-of-the-art shared software. 12 month outcomes include healthier growth patterns and an economic evaluation. coming soon

Best practice in the detection, assessment and management of childhood obesity in general practice (2008-2009).
This trial focuses on practice change strategies in general practice, using the collaborative Breakthrough Series methodology. The general practice program will draw on established obesity management guidelines and an expert reference panel. The quality improvement program, focusing on workshopping and then implementing findings, will then help to upskill GPs. It may also generate new GP driven innovations that will prove useful in implementing obesity management guidelines. More information can found here and here.
This project is led from Monash with collaboration from Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.

Clinical and community studies of child and adolescent obesity research: a co-ordinated approach (2007-2009).
Without a nationally, or internationally, co-ordinated approach to research into childhood obesity, solutions have proved frustratingly elusive. This project will formalise and foster the development of a strong and co-ordinated Australasian infrastructure that will increase the impact of childhood obesity research, shorten times to outcomes, and provide flexibility to address new questions and policy environments as soon as they arise.

LEAP 2: The Live, Eat and Play Study (2005-2007).
Preventing childhood obesity is an important goal – but many thousands of Australian children are already overweight or obese. What role can family doctors play in managing childhood obesity?
LEAP addressed this question in a large randomised trial. Family doctors learned new techniques that aimed to help overweight Victorian children aged 5 to 10 years old develop healthier lifestyles and weight. Results are due by 2009. More information can be found here and here.
