biography

Professor Monagle is a dual trained paediatric haematologist (FRCPA/FRACP). During the period 1996-1998, he held a Research Fellowship in paediatric thrombosis at McMaster University, Canada, where he also completed a Masters of Science (Health Research Methodology) degree. In addition, Professor Monagle held a Fellowship of American College Chest Physicians in 2001. He received his MD from Monash University in 2003.

In 1999, Professor Monagle, as a first year consultant, was appointed Director, Division Laboratory Services, Royal Children's Hospital/Royal Women's Hospital and until 2005 oversaw the rebuilding of the service as a public hospital entity. In 2001 he was awarded the RCH Gold Medal, the highest hospital award.

achievements

Paul was awarded one of three prizes for most outstanding paediatric research at the 2008 American Heart Association conference, for a multi centre RCT of anticoagulation following Fontan surgery, for which he is a Principal Investigator. Professor Monagle shares a patent with Dr Vera Ignjatovic (a fellow member of the Haematology Research team) and their Canadian collaborators, which already has international licensing agreements in place, and has successfully passed the second year milestones for development. He continues to build collaborations nationally and internationally.

research focus & interest

In April 2005 he accepted the position of Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology, The University of Melbourne and in July 2008, he took up the position as Stevenson Chair, Head of the University's Department of Paediatrics. Professor Monagle continues to serve the discipline through his roles within the Royal College of Physicians Australia, as well as a number of federal and state committees. Internationally, he chairs the American College of Chest Physicians and co-chairs the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) paediatric and perinatal scientific subcommittee. He is also an Associate Editor for "Thrombosis Research" and a reviewer for over 20 international journals.

Professor Monagle has supervised or co-supervised 20 FRACP/FRCPA trainees, four PhD, two MD, two Masters, five Honours and 18 Advanced Medical Students, in addition to six international visitors to his unit for training, and actively teaches undergraduate and postgraduate programs. He is the Director of the Department of Haematology, Royal Children's Hospital and is active in his clinical inpatient and outpatient work.
