biography

Dr Kirkwood undertook post-doctoral training at the Centers of Disease Control, USA (1997-2000), and returned to Australia to continue studies on viral agents important in childhood disease.

He plays a major international role in planning, training and implementation of global strain surveillance programs through his roles heading the WHO Collaborating Centre and the Asian Rotavirus Surveillance Network laboratory. Nationally, Dr Kirkwood heads the Australian Rotavirus Surveillance Program, which has characterised rotavirus strains causing disease in children for the past 10 years. He also plays a key role in the development of second generation rotavirus vaccines, including the development of the Australian vaccine.

He has successfully obtained fellowships including an NHMRC RD Wright Career Development award and The Phillip Bushell Fellowship from the Australian Gastroenterological Society of Australia. He has obtained continuous competitive research funding from NHMRC, industry and charities since 2000.

Dr Kirkwood is currently a member of the Food Safety Council, a Victorian State government committee and a member of the advisory group for the development of the UK-bovine rotavirus vaccine, PATH.
