biography
Dr Kirkwood undertook post-doctoral training at the Centers of
Disease Control, USA (1997-2000), and returned to Australia to
continue studies on viral agents important in childhood
disease.
He plays a major international role in planning, training and
implementation of global strain surveillance programs through his
roles heading the WHO Collaborating Centre and the Asian Rotavirus
Surveillance Network laboratory. Nationally, Dr Kirkwood heads the
Australian Rotavirus Surveillance Program, which has characterised
rotavirus strains causing disease in children for the past 10
years. He also plays a key role in the development of second
generation rotavirus vaccines, including the development of the
Australian vaccine.
He has successfully obtained fellowships including an NHMRC RD
Wright Career Development award and The Phillip Bushell Fellowship
from the Australian Gastroenterological Society of Australia. He
has obtained continuous competitive research funding from NHMRC,
industry and charities since 2000.
Dr Kirkwood is currently a member of the Food Safety Council, a
Victorian State government committee and a member of the advisory
group for the development of the UK-bovine rotavirus vaccine,
PATH.
He currently supervises four PhD students and one Honours student,
and has provided an undergraduate lecture series for students at
Victoria's La Trobe University since 2007.
