Developmental Epigenetics
Dr Jeff Craig
Dr Jeff Craig’s primary research interest is in chromosome structure and function. He is interested in the “epigenetic” mechanisms, whereby the environment can influence chromosome function and thereby influence human health and disease. Dr Craig started his research career as a cytogeneticist, and then gained his Ph.D. at the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh. There, he shed light on the relationships between chromosome banding patterns and gene density. After postdoctoral research in Munich, Edinburgh and Melbourne, he set up the Developmental Epigenetics Group at MCRI in early 2006 with Dr Richard Saffery, with the aim of investigating epigenetic contributions to childhood and adolescent disease. He currently jointly supervises 18 research staff, including four PhD students. Dr Craig has published in high impact journals such as Nature, Nature Genetics, Molecular Cell and the EMBO Journal and has attracted grants from the NHMRC and other sources. He was awarded the Eppendorf Young Investigator Award in 2007 and has played many roles within the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), including Sate Convenor in 2006. Dr Craig is a keen science communicator and is a panel member on a community radio science program.
