A bit about my research

I am completing my Honours project at MCRI within the Bruce Lefroy Centre for Genetic Health Research. My project is to investigate the needs and experiences of young people living at risk of Huntington disease, particularly in relation to predictive genetic testing, living in a family affected by Huntington disease, and the delivery of predictive testing services.

Why I chose to study at MCRI

Prior to beginning Honours at MCRI, I studied Biomedical Science at Monash University. I chose to study at MCRI because they offered a wide range of projects in the area of genetics, which is what I am most interested in. I also chose MCRI as I was able to complete a non-lab based project, which is more relevant to my career prospects.
I found out about MCRI through the person who is now my honours supervisor. I was given their contact by someone at my university when I was inquiring about people involved in careers and research in the area of genetics. Speaking to them led me to discover the wide range of projects available at MCRI that were well suited to my area of interest.

Highlights of my time at MCRI so far

MCRI is certainly an inspiring place study, as you are constantly surrounded a huge number of researchers, as well as everyone working in the hospital, all working towards a common goal of improving human lives through research and healthcare. The seminars by international experts given multiple times a week also provide great opportunities to broaden your knowledge and catch up with other students. So far I feel as though I have great support from my supervisors, and from MCRI in my research, and I have enjoyed working in the flexible and stimulating environment.

Miranda is a recipient of a 2016 MCRI Honours scholarship. For more information about Honours at MCRI click here.
