  • We completed the AFS pilot study for wave two: over 60 women and 20 children took part. Feedback from women and families taking part was used to refine study procedures and finalise the questionnaire and children’s activities.
  • We developed comprehensive fieldwork guidelines and administrative systems for data collection.

.

  • We completed the first stage of fieldwork training (which covered community engagement, recruitment, interview and questionnaire administration procedures, data management, health and safety protocols and team work).
  • We celebrated 10 years of partnership with the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia.
  • Follow-up of mothers living in Adelaide commenced in January 2018. Our first six interviews were completed in February. Since then we have commenced visits to regional areas of South Australia in May, with planning well under way for visits to Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Whyalla, Ceduna and Port Lincoln before the end of the year.
  • Training for the Children’s Activities happened over March and April. The children will be invited to participate in several different activities to assess their cognitive, speech and language development. The children’s activities will be facilitated by Aboriginal researchers who have completed training to undertake these activities.
  • Ethics approval has now been obtained from the South Australian Department for Education enabling us to liaise with schools to schedule children’s activities at state primary schools during school hours.
  • We are also working with many Aboriginal community organisations, health services and children’s centres and are grateful for the generous support we are receiving from many agencies.
