Assoc/Prof. Salvatore Pepe is a clinical scientist who leads the Molecular & Cellular Cardiology Laboratory in the Heart Research Group (Clinical Sciences Theme) at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and is a clinical research manager in the Department of Cardiology, Royal Children's Hospital.
Before working at Melbourne Children's Campus, he was Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Research Laboratory, (Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery), at the Alfred Hospital, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Department of Surgery -Alfred, Central Clinical School, Monash University, involved in clinical trial and laboratory research focused on cellular and mitochondrial processes in heart failure, transplantation, and cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. Earlier posts include a Research Fellowship at the Baker Heart Research Institute, Melbourne, and a National Institutes of Health Fogarty Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Gerontology Research Center, (LCS, IRP, NIA, NIH) Johns Hopkins Hospital, Bayview Campus, Baltimore, USA.
Working with cardiac surgery, cardiology and intensive care clinicians, Dr Pepe's work is focused on complications arising from congenital and acquired heart and lung disorders, premature birth and surgical interventions. His research program spans from in vitro and in vivo laboratory studies to clinical trials, translating new understanding of disease mechanisms and novel therapy to clinical use. Currently he is Chief Investigator A of an NHMRC funded clinical trial, testing the safety and efficacy of cord blood stem cell therapy in children at risk of heart failure.
A/Prof Pepe is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Australia's premiere cardiology research journal, Heart Lung & Circulation (Elsevier, Sydney), and is also an Associate Editor for Heliyon-Clinical Research (Cell Press-Elsevier, London UK), and Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine -Cardiovascular Biologics & Regenerative Medicine (Lausanne, Switzerland). A/Prof Pepe has regularly served NHMRC, NHF and ARC as a grant funding panel member and external expert grant reviewer and is an invited peer reviewer for numerous medical and scientific journals. He is Past-President of the International Society for Heart Research and recipient of the 2016 ISHR Distinguished Leader Award. He is an international Fellow of the American Heart Association and a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
