Professor Terry Nolan is a paediatrician and clinical epidemiologist. He is a medical graduate of the University of Western Australia, trained in paediatrics at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and at the Montréal Children's Hospital, with a PhD in in epidemiology and biostatistics at McGill University in Montréal. He established the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit at the Royal Children's Hospital in 1989, was promoted to Professor in 1999 and became Deputy Head of Paediatrics within the School of Medicine. In 2001, he was appointed Foundation Head of the School of Population Health at the University of Melbourne (renamed Melbourne School of Population and Global Health in 2013 with incorporation of Nossal Institute for Global Health). He established the Vaccination and Immunisation Research Group (VIRGo) in the early 1990s. His research has been in clinical paediatrics in adjustment to chronic illness and in incontinence, and in immunisation and clinical trials of new vaccines. His expertise relates to immunisation, pandemic planning and response, clinical trials, research investment in clinical and population health research, research quality, injury control and other areas. He is the immediate past Chair of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), was a member and then Deputy Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) Research Committee over nine years. He has more than 215 publications including 200 in refereed journals and a track record of over $40 million in project grant funding. He is a member of the Australian Academy of Science's National Committee for Medicine, and of SAGE, the World Health Organisation's main advisory group on vaccines and immunisation.
