Dr. Spijker studied Medicine and biomedical sciences at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), The Netherlands. He obtained his medical degree in 2009 and his master's degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2010 (cum laude). Dr. Spijker performed his PhD at the department of Nephrology under supervision of Dr. De Koning, Dr. Rabelink and Dr. Carlotti. He was awarded the NVE-Ipsen award for best basic science article in 2013 from the Dutch Society for Endocrinology and in 2017 the Dr. F. Gerritzen Award for best Thesis in Diabetes Research in the Netherlands. In 2014, he started his medical specialisation in internal medicine at the LUMC and proceeded with his advanced trainings in 2018 to become a clinical nephrologist. Siebe is currently joining MCRI as a visiting researcher to engage in kidney organoid research and CRISPR Cas gene editing. His aim is to combine (fundamental) research in regenerative medicine with daily clinical practice.
