In our submission to the new DFAT International Disability Equity and Rights Strategy, we highlighted the urgent needs of children and adolescents with disabilities.

It's crucial for the Strategy to prioritise their inclusion, as one in ten children globally experience moderate to severe functional difficulties and their needs differ significantly from those of older adults. This focus is essential for ensuring equitable access to health, education, and opportunities, and for preventing further disadvantage.

MCRI recommends that the new Strategy explicitly include the needs of children and adolescents to align with Australia’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This approach would help support initiatives focused on children and adolescents, while also addressing their interconnected needs across all areas of life.

We aim to close the widening gap in children’s outcomes, which has been worsened by recent crises and ongoing inequalities.
