About cardiovascular disease (CVD)

Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease (CVD), is the leading cause of death both in Australia and worldwide. Although heart attacks and strokes don’t usually occur until adulthood, the disease process that leads to these problems begins during childhood.

Our Initiative aims to support every Australian child to have a healthier start in life. We’re doing this by addressing a range of barriers that can make it difficult for some children to maintain cardiovascular health.

About the initiative

For the first time, our Healthy Start for Young Hearts Alliance brings together leading CVD experts across the public health and clinical fields, as well as world-class platforms to create an evidence-based roadmap for CVD prevention and treatment.

This includes policy reform, ensuring fair and effective public health interventions, and improving aspects of the healthcare system, all with a focus on equity and scalability.

Our research team

The Healthy Start for Young Hearts Alliance is led by Dr Rachel Climie (University of Tasmania), Professor Terry Dwyer, Dr Sherly Li and Dr Jonathan Mynard from Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI).
