Bianca Devsam
Bianca Devsam
Bianca completed her undergraduate nursing and midwifery training at the University of Queensland. She has worked as a clinical neonatal nurse on the Butterfly Ward (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) for over 10 years, and has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing Practice (Neonatal Intensive Care) and a Master of Advanced Nursing Practice (Minor Thesis) at the University of Melbourne.
In 2016, Bianca participated in the RCH BEST Practice Program, marking the beginning of her research journey. She investigated nursing assessment of pain in neonates and led a hospital-wide change in the neonatal pain assessment tool. In 2020, she was awarded the Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Nursing Development Scholarship (DEMNDS), which she used to develop an evidence-based clinical guideline for neonatal pain management at RCH.
Bianca is currently undertaking a PhD with the Vaccine Uptake Group at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), funded by the MandEval MRFF. Her research focuses on special medical exemptions for mandated vaccines, exploring the complexities and ethical dimensions of exemption processes, with particular attention to policy, clinical decision-making, and implications for public trust and healthcare practice.
Alongside her PhD, Bianca works part-time with the RCH Neurology Department, coordinating NIMBUS – a multicentre study across Victoria’s five major NICUs investigating innovative MRI and blood-based predictive tools to guide interventions following neonatal arterial ischaemic stroke.
