Role Team Leader / Biostatistician
Research area Population Health
Francesca is a senior biostatistician and Team Leader at the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU) within the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI). She supports the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials across a broad range of paediatric and public health disciplines. Francesca works closely with the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and is a member of the Melbourne Children’s Trials Centre (MCTC), contributing her statistical expertise to complex, multicentre studies that aim to improve child health outcomes.

Since joining MCRI in 2011, Francesca has led the statistical aspects of numerous trials in areas including neonatology, allergy, infectious diseases, neurodisability and education. She currently provides statistical leadership across several ongoing multicentre trials and contributes to the planning of new research initiatives. Her role spans protocol development, sample size calculation, randomisation, statistical programming, and the interpretation and dissemination of results.

Francesca has held Chief Investigator roles on multiple successful National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grants, and has served as the trial statistician for major studies, including an international COVID-19 prevention trial. She is an active member of Data Safety Monitoring Boards and Trial Steering Committees, and contributes to the Generation Victoria (GenV) Trials Group, helping to integrate trial methodology within large cohort studies.

Francesca is also a member of the Drug and Device Trial Subcommittee (DTS), which provides scientific review and advice to the Royal Children’s Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) on matters relating to clinical trials investigating drugs and devices conducted across the Melbourne Children’s Campus.

In addition to her research leadership, Francesca plays a strong mentoring and teaching role. She provides training and supervision to junior biostatisticians, early career researchers, project managers and data managers at MCRI and RCH. Her contributions to the field have been recognised through national awards, and she is a regular presenter at national and international clinical trials and biostatistics conferences.
