Professor Nigel Crawford is a consultant paediatrician and an internationally recognised vaccinologist. He is the Director of SAEFVIC (Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination In the Community) the Victorian safety service, and the Melbourne Vaccine Education Centre (MVEC) an accredited member of WHO-Vaccine Safety Network (VSN). Prof Crawford is also Head of Immunisation Service at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH).
Joined as member of the Australian Therapeutic Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) in 2014, Prof Crawford was appointed as Chair between 2021 and 2025 and led the Pneumococcal, Mpox, Respiratory viruses, Meningococcal, COVID-19 and Special Risk Groups subgroups.
He is an active member on numerous international and national vaccinology committees such as WHO/WPRO, INSIS Canada, Health Research Council of New Zealand, NCRIS (ARIA) Department of Health Australia (TGA-JIC) and Spleen Australia. He is the lead investigator of the Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) network and leads the iGAS surveillance. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof Crawford led the Melbourne Children’s Campus’ COVID-19 platform of research and continues fostering collaborative relationships with Monash University, Peter Doherty Institute (PDI), WHO Collaborating Centre, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Boston Children’s Hospital and University of Alberta. These collaborations aim to advance innovative research initiatives and strategies to prevent future vaccine preventable diseases. At the same time Prof Crawford was seconded as Senior Medical Advisor (Vaccine safety and evaluation, COVID-19 response) to the Victorian Department of Health.
Prof Crawford's research interests include the translatio of evidence into policy, vaccine safety, immunisation of special risk groups and emerging infections. He has an extensive publication record, with numerous peer-reviewed articles contributing to his expertise. Prof Crawford is regularly invited to provide expert opinion on current topics on both national and international media.
