Prof Salvatore Pepe
Prof. Salvatore Pepe is a clinical scientist and Co-Group Leader of the Heart Research Group (Clinical Sciences Theme) at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and is a clinical research manager in the Department of Cardiology, Royal Children's Hospital.
He is a Steering Committee member of the MCRI Heart Flagship and an honorary Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, the University of Melbourne.
Before working at Melbourne Children's Campus, he was Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Research Laboratory, (Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery), at the Alfred Hospital, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Department of Surgery -Alfred, Central Clinical School, Monash University, involved in clinical trial and laboratory research focused on cellular and mitochondrial processes in heart failure, transplantation, and cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.
Earlier posts include a Research Fellowship at the Baker Heart Research Institute, Melbourne, and a National Institutes of Health Fogarty Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Gerontology Research Center, (LCS, IRP, NIA, NIH) Johns Hopkins Hospital, Bayview Campus, Baltimore, USA.
Working with cardiac surgery, cardiology and intensive care clinicians, Dr Pepe's work is focused on complications arising from congenital and acquired heart and lung disorders, premature birth and surgical interventions. His research program spans from in vitro and in vivo laboratory studies to clinical trials, translating new understanding of disease mechanisms and novel therapy to clinical use.
Currently he is Chief Investigator A of an NHMRC funded clinical trial, testing the safety and efficacy of cord blood stem cell therapy in children at risk of heart failure.
Prof Pepe is Editor-in-Chief of Australia's premiere cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery journal, Heart Lung & Circulation (Elsevier, Sydney), and is also Section Editor for Heliyon- Cardiology & Cardiovascular Medicine (Cell Press-Elsevier, London UK).
Prof Pepe has regularly served NHMRC, NHF, ARC, and numerous international research funding bodies, as a grant funding panel member and external expert grant reviewer and is an invited peer reviewer for numerous medical and scientific journals.
He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ). He is Past-President of the International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) and recipient of the 2016 ISHR Distinguished Leader Award. Prof. Pepe was awarded the 2023 Basic Science Lectureship (Winifred G.Nayler Award Lecture) by CSANZ.
In 2023 he was elected a Fellow of the European Society for Cardiology (FESC). He is an elected international Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA) and Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ).
