Sarah Grimshaw
I am a passionate researcher and clinician with expertise in paediatric oncology, physical activity interventions, and the impact of cancer treatments on children’s physical function and participation.
As a Physiotherapist and Post-Doctoral Researcher at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) my research focuses on the prevention and management of treatment-related toxicity in children with cancer, with a particular emphasis on promoting physical activity during acute treatment phases.
I hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from La Trobe University, where my doctoral research explored strategies to increase physical activity participation in children undergoing cancer treatment. My work incorporates both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including systematic literature reviews, consumer and clinician interviews, and intervention trials. This research has resulted in multiple publications in high-impact journals.
With over a decade of clinical experience as a Senior Physiotherapist at the Royal Children’s Hospital, I have developed a deep understanding of the complexities of paediatric oncology care, including in-patient and home-based physiotherapy for children with acute health needs. I have also led multidisciplinary teams and contributed to educational initiatives within the clinical setting.
In addition to my clinical and research roles, I am actively involved in the international paediatric oncology exercise community. I serve as the Chair of the Little Big Steps Exercise Medicine Advisory Committee, where I manage research strategy, team leadership, and professional network development for the charity. I am also a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Paediatric Occupational and Physical Therapy, and a scientific committee member for the upcoming Pediatric Exercise Oncology Congress. I regularly present my research at national and international conferences.
Key Expertise:
• Paediatric oncology physiotherapy & rehabilitation
• Physical activity interventions for children with cancer
• Behaviour change research & intervention design
• Clinical trial coordination & management
• Research funding, grant applications, and budget management
• Mentorship, student supervision, and clinical education
• Research advisory committee leadership & strategy development
I am passionate about improving the quality of life for children undergoing cancer treatment through evidence-based interventions and collaborative research.
