Dr Dan Pellicci
Dr Pellicci completed his PhD in 2013 in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. He is Group Leader of the Cellular Immunology group at MCRI and his research uses flow cytometry, protein biochemistry and transcriptome analysis to understand the role of immune cells in health and disease. His research is currently supported by an NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship and several NHMRC project grants. Dr Pellicci was recently awarded a CSL Centenary Fellowship, due to commence in January 2019.

Dr Pellicci's research focuses on understanding the biology of unconventional T cells in the human immune system. Unconventional T cells make up a large proportion of T cells in humans and rapidly mount potent immune responses upon activation. For this reason, these cells represent potentially important immunotherapeutic targets. He has recently generated novel tetramers to investigate the role of CD1-restricted T cells in tuberculosis, which claims over 1 million lives each year.
- The development and homeostasis of MAIT cells.
- The role of CD8 co-receptor in MAIT cell activation.
- Identification and characterization of CD1d restricted Type-2 NKT cells.
- The production of human and macaque CD1 tetramers.
- Identification and characterisation of CD1-restricted T cells in healthy versus Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-infected or BCG-vaccinated donors.
- Investigation of unconventional T cells in macaque models of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and Mtb.
- Identification of CD1-restricted lipid antigens.
- Structural basis of antigen recognition by CD1-restricted T cells.
- Investigation of post-transplant immunity in heart transplant recipients.
