More about Rotavirus

Our mission

Our mission is to reduce the global burden of rotavirus through groundbreaking research, innovative vaccines, and effective prevention strategies. We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of where they live, has access to life-saving vaccines and treatments.

Groundbreaking research

Since the identification of rotavirus by Professor Ruth Bishop in 1973, MCRI has been a leader in rotavirus research. Our scientists have developed the RV3-BB vaccine, which has shown remarkable efficacy in preventing severe rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants. This vaccine is a testament to over 40 years of dedicated research and collaboration.

Global impact

The RV3-BB vaccine is not only part of Australia's National Immunisation Program but is also recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for all children.

Our research has demonstrated that early vaccination, starting within the first five days of life, can protect infants from severe rotavirus infections, especially in low-resource settings.

Why it matters

Rotavirus remains a significant threat to child health, particularly in countries with limited access to healthcare. By advancing our understanding and prevention of rotavirus, we aim to save millions of lives and improve the health outcomes of children globally.
