- Project status: Active
Research area: Clinical Sciences > Transgender Health Research
Leading research with trans young people across Australia to support their wellbeing and strengthen trans healthcare.
ARCTYC is a partnership between researchers, trans young people, and health professionals.
We use trans inclusively to refer to all trans and gender diverse people, including those who are non-binary, agender, sistergirls, brotherboys, transgender, genderfluid and other gender-expansive identities.

Research overview
Through an MCRI-led project, ARCTYC is doing research that aims to:
- Build large-scale evidence that represents more trans young people from across Australia
- Improve understanding about the longer-term outcomes for trans young people accessing gender-affirming care
- Uplift protective factors and improve supports for trans young people and their families
- Strengthen how services deliver gender-affirming care across Australia.
Who is ARCTYC?
ARCTYC includes more than 60 investigators and a network of 150+ people from more than 25 organisations, including universities and research institutes, hospitals and gender services, and community organisations. By working with a group of youth advisors, we bring together lived experience, research evidence, and clinical expertise to strengthen evidence-based practice and support trans young people to thrive.
ARCTYC has several committees and groups to make sure we do ethical and responsible research that has a real-world impact for trans young people and families. At the heart of ARCTYC is our Youth Advisory Committee, which helps ensure that trans young people have a meaningful say in our work.
About ARCTYC
We are leading research with trans young people across Australia to support their wellbeing and strengthen trans healthcare.
ARCTYC is funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and consists of four areas of research, with a particular focus on gender-affirming care.
Across Australia, gender services support trans young people and their families as they navigate, express, and affirm their gender identity. This is an evidence-based approach called gender-affirming care and may include:
- support with social transition (how the young person expresses their gender)
- medical care (e.g. reversible puberty suppression and gender-affirming hormones)
- psychological and allied health supports and assessments
- family supports.
Research methods
ARCTYC’s MRFF-funded project has four streams of research:
