Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU) offers hands-on training in recommended computer software tools needed to conduct a research study.

These courses are delivered by Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU), a partnership between Murdoch Children's Research Institute and the University of Melbourne.

Complementing the research methods program, these courses provide hands-on training in recommended computer software tools, firstly for establishing sound and reliable data capture and management systems (using REDCap) and secondly for data manipulation and analysis (using Stata or R).

All of our computer software courses are delivered online via Zoom or Teams.

REDCap courses

MCRI offers two courses on REDCap: a secure, web-based application for building and managing online databases and surveys. This software is available for use in MCRI research free of charge.

We recommend completing REDCap 1 prior to enrolling in REDCap 2. A full set of course notes in electronic format will be made available to students.

Please note: REDCap courses are only available for staff who are part of the Melbourne Children’s campus. This includes Murdoch Children's Research Institute, The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) and the University of Melbourne, Department of Paediatrics) staff.

Stata Courses

We are offering two courses on Stata: an integrated statistical software package that offers data manipulation, data visualization (graphics), a wide range of statistical methods and tools for reproducible analysis and reporting.

We recommend completing Stata 1 prior to enrolling in Stata 2.

Stata provides a balance of user-friendly features and flexibility, which allows it to be used for both basic and advanced data manipulation and analysis.

Materials provided

For both Stata courses, students will be provided with:

  • Comprehensive course notes, including answers to all exercises.
  • Files required for course exercises.
  • Training videos that work systematically through the material in the course notes (available for the week of the course).
  • A 30-day free trial licence and Stata installation instructions.

Stata software

Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) has a site license for the use of the StataNow SE software package. This can be freely installed on both MCRI and personal computers for MCRI staff and affiliates, including students. It is only to be used for MCRI-related work.
