Suicide prevention research awarded federal grant
A new Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) project will research suicide prevention among new dads after receiving a $951,000 Federal Government grant.
MCRI Associate Professor Rebecca Giallo will lead the project, which aims to develop effective interventions to improve men's mental health during early fatherhood.
In 2018, suicide was responsible for 12.1 deaths per 100,000 people in Australia, with 3,048 suicides recorded.
One of the highest rates of suicide among men coincides with becoming fathers and raising young children.
The project received its funding under the government's Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission announced by Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt.
The mission aims to support projects that better understand and provide the right services, at the right time to help reduce the rate of suicide in Australia.
If you are thinking about suicide or experiencing a personal crisis help is available.
