Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) was honoured to be part of the G’Day USA Arts Gala, a celebration of Australian excellence across the arts and sciences.
Hosted by the American Australian Association (AAA) in Los Angeles on 26 February, the event shone a spotlight on exceptional Australian talent and fostered the strong, enduring ties between the two nations.
The evening heard from award-winning actors and rising stars alongside moving tributes to innovation and impact. MCRI Co-Chair Sarah Murdoch and MCRI Theme Director of Stem Cell Medicine Professor Enzo Porrello delivered an inspiring update on the Institute’s pioneering medical research and global collaborations including the Decoding Broken Hearts project.
The project is a collaboration between MCRI and Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco aiming to advance their work in stem cell technology and artificial intelligence to understand and treat the underlying causes of congenital heart disease.
“Looking around this room, I’m reminded how much Aussies punch well above our weight,” Ms Murdoch said. “At MCRI, we punch well above our weight. We are based in Melbourne, but we are a global powerhouse.”
“We should be so proud of Australian science and the discoveries that we’ve made that continue to make such an impact around the world.”
Professor Porrello also acknowledged the vital support of the AAA, whose travel scholarship enabled emerging Australian researchers to undertake critical research and training opportunities in the US. This investment in early-career scientists strengthens global collaboration and accelerates discovery ensuring that the next generation of researchers can continue to drive breakthroughs in child health.
