Dr Michael Cheung
Associate Professor Michael Cheung has practiced paediatric cardiology for more than 15 years. He has trained at world-leading congenital cardiac centres including Great Ormond Street and Royal Brompton Hospital in London, Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. He was appointed Director of Paediatric Cardiology in Melbourne and leader of the Heart Research Group at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in September 2011 and remains in these positions. He is also head of echocardiography and cardiac MRI. He has been a full time clinician while also undertaking research supported by the Canadian Heart Foundation from 2002 to 2004 for his MD thesis and a Heart Foundation Fellowship from 2008 to 2010. Associate Professor Cheung has published more than 70 peer reviewed manuscripts and written six book chapters with another in press.
The Heart Research group he leads includes seven senior researchers and five postgraduate fellows. He has established a research lab for echocardiography and vascular ultrasound, with four laboratory research assistants. There is significant experience and ongoing studies in molecular cardiology, in vitro cardiac assessment and also invasive assessments of cardiac function in animal models.
Associate Professor Michael Cheung's research has focused on areas of cardiology with direct clinical relevance and applicability, or the potential for rapid transition to clinical care. The main areas of research are:
- Remote ischaemic preconditioning for the induction of organ protection. This has led to a significant body of work at the molecular level, animal and human models of the paradigm. Associate Professor Cheung published the first randomised human clinical trial of remote ischaemic preconditioning.
- Novel indices of ventricular function. This includes work using tissue Doppler echocardiography as an index of contractility validated in animal models using conductance catheters and clinical studies of the force-frequency relationship.
- Novel assessment techniques for blood flow. This work in development uses data from MRI and echocardiography to analyse blood flow in complex haemodynamic (blood flow or circulation) conditions encountered in congenital heart disease.
- Vascular function in congenital and acquired heart disease. This is work in collaborative studies funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) including the long term follow-up of premature infants, Kawasaki disease and perinatal infections.
- Functional outcomes following treatment of congenital heart disease. In addition to a study examining the effect of exercise rehabilitation in patients with repaired congenital heart disease, Associate Professor Michael Cheung has started studies examining the psychological and neurodevelopmental impacts of treatment in this high risk group and susceptible group of children.
